We welcome volunteers interested in serving the community.
A variety of volunteer opportunities abound.
(You do not need to live in Glen Ellyn to volunteer.)
High school, college and graduate students -- and recent grads -- are welcome to volunteer to gain work or service experience. (Sorry, but we don't have any paid internships available right now.)
We are happy to meet with you or talk with you on the phone if you are considering volunteering or interning. We will try to match you with your area of greatest interest. Call 630-469-1867 or email director@gehs.org.
This work requires computer experience, but additional training is provided. Whether you enjoy working with three-dimensional items, documents, photographs or textiles, we can teach you how to handle and catalog items into our database and collections.
We need people to provide tours at this 1846 wayside inn. All training providing. Must have an interest in people and learning local history. (It's also a great way to gain public speaking experience!)
If you like retail, or would like to gain experience working in a store, try volunteering at our gift shop, Stacy's Corners Store. We will train you to work the cash register (our digital point of sale system). Works best if you can commit to the same hours per week, most weeks.
One source of revenue for our non-profit is our historical house plaque program, where we research local homes and businesses at least 80 years old. While much of the research can be done online, some of the older books of deeds and property transfers have to be searched by hand. If you love doing research and enjoying going down history rabbit holes, this is for you!
Interested in volunteering a day at a time? Help at special events, and you can easily fit volunteering into your schedule. We need folks to help with one-day events like the Vintage Auto Fest in June, or Pioneer Day in September. Or help with our Antique/Vintage fundraising sale. We need greeters at our many programs. Or come help fold and stuff when we have a big mailing to get out!
We receive queries on a regular basis about local history. And they take time to research! If you know a little about Glen Ellyn history, or are willing to learn, we can provide you with queries and topics to research. We also need people interested in genealogy and willing to explore family histories. You never know what question will be asked next!
You may have expertise which can be useful to one of our committees, such as the program/education, finance, fundraising, or museum committees. Or your expertise may serve the History Society in others ways -- for instance, providing legal or marketing or fundraising advice or services.
We frequently receive requests for programs about Glen Ellyn history, and we need presenters! We have programs on PowerPoint you can present, or you can work with us to develop your own.
We need people with graphic design experience to help with social media, or to help design posters, brochures, or other marketing forms.
The garden at Stacy's Tavern Museum used to hold vegetables and herbs, and it needs help to return to its pre-COVID state. We also need people to help with weeding, watering, and keeping our grounds beautiful.
This list is not comprehensive. If you have an idea about a way you would like to serve the Historical Society, just contact us!
If you are interested in learning more, contact the director at director@gehs.org or call 630.469.1867. Ready to apply? Just complete the attached form and email it, or bring it with you to your interview.
